Cartus Prepares for Hurricane Irene

Cartus Prepares for Hurricane Irene

Here at Cartus, we are keeping a close eye on developments of Hurricane Irene. Cartus staff and the Cartus Crisis Management Team are paying careful attention to the path of the hurricane along the east coast of the U.S. and are working with clients, relocating employees, and our network of providers to assess the situation with special attention to possible safety concerns, both for our employees and for our clients’ relocating colleagues and their families.

Safety is of paramount importance and with this in mind, we will continue to adjust our service delivery as appropriate to make sure that no unnecessary risks are taken.

The Cartus Crisis Management Team has already activated our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery protocols so we are prepared to implement them immediately, if necessary. In the event that the hurricane impacts the Danbury area with power outages and/or flooding, Business Continuity allows employees in our Danbury office to operate from their homes or ensures that Cartus employees in locations not impacted by the hurricane (such as Irving, Texas or one of our other U.S. offices) provide support as needed. Our Disaster Recovery plans make alternate resources available to replace temporary telephone, computer, and other business functions until normal operations can resume. (more…)

The Bourne Revelation: What Clients Want

The Bourne Revelation: What Clients Want

I recently had the opportunity to travel to Brussels for a business presentation. Upon my arrival, I was awestruck by Brussels and its beauty. That is not the only thing I noticed in this great city. After my meeting there, I realized that our clients, regardless of industry or location, are looking for many of the same things.

Brussels truly intrigued me;  you get the sense of old Europe – cobblestone streets, outdoor cafes, European architecture lining street after street, narrow alleyways and, of course, La Grand-Place which delivers a “wow!” and an immediate respect for the history of the city. As a child of the Cold War, I couldn’t help but think that it was a perfect setting for a Jason Bourne movie. There could very well be a clandestine operation taking place right around the corner from NATO (although the first movie starts off in Russia and there are no scenes in Brussels, one is allowed to imagine). As I looked across the way, however, there was the European Commission, the unofficial headquarters of the EU and a sign of the new Europe, and I was brought back to reality and out of my starring role in a spy flick. We have also been shortlisted in two other award categories:  Most Innovative Use of Technology in Global Mobility (Program Management) and Best Vendor Partnership with our colleagues at SAP—an award that we won last year with our client, Citi.

Recognising professional excellence in the global mobility industry, FEM’s European annual awards ceremony will be held this year on Friday 4 November in the Park Plaza Hotel, Central London when the winners of the awards will be announced.

Who Knew? A Rebate From the Gas Pump!

Who Knew? A Rebate From the Gas Pump!

“Giving back” has taken on a new meaning for us at Cartus. We are extremely pleased to be distributing funds we were able to recover on behalf of many clients as a result of the settlement of a class action lawsuit, called In re Household Goods Movers Antitrust Litigation, which related to disputed fuel surcharges made on U.S. household goods shipments by several van lines under Tariff 400N between March 19, 2003 and December 31, 2007. Cartus has recovered $2.2 million for clients, 480 of whom will be receiving refunds

Our role in managing household goods shipments for clients puts us in an excellent position to submit the documentation necessary to file for the available refunds. Specifically, because clients booked moves through Cartus and Cartus is not an interstate van line, we became a member of the class eligible to share in the settlement agreed to by defendants. We researched all moves managed by Cartus for clients during this period, determined which moves met the eligibility requirements, and then filed and pursued the necessary claims to receive the available compensation on our clients’ behalf. The amount recovered per move was not particularly large, but the number of moves the lawsuit covered was substantial, having taken place over a period of almost five years. Information on the case and the claims process can be found at householdgoodsantitrustsettlement.com. (more…)

It Costs How Much? Managing Expenses After You’ve Sent Your Employee on Assignment

It Costs How Much? Managing Expenses After You’ve Sent Your Employee on Assignment

For more than a decade, many global organizations have completed some type of cost projection before sending an employee on assignment; in fact, according to several 2011 surveys, between 50 and 86% of companies use cost projections. But after that valuable exercise has been completed at the beginning of an assignment, there is typically a dramatic drop-off in the number of firms that continue to track actual costs and reset budgets based on them; in fact, only about 33% do so.

At the National Foreign Trade Council’s Annual International Human Resources Forum held in New York on 14 & 15 July, I had the pleasure of co-presenting with Julie Johns, manager of global mobility at our client company, Corning. Julie and I discussed “Best Practices in International Assignment Cost Management,” including projecting, tracking, budgeting, and forecasting methods. Some of the points we touched on were:

1)   How organizations can gain an understanding of what the potential costs of an international assignment might be;

2)   Examples of formats for cost projections, including the variations among various models;

3)   How to set assignment budgets and how to track costs during the assignment;

4)   Using the Cartus International Budgeting and Forecasting Tool (IBFT) to predict remaining assignment costs. (more…)
