While at meetings with a number of our clients last week, one of the topics that came up frequently was the importance of identifying and managing the key drivers and trends in our industry. At Cartus, we know that industry events and forums play a key role in that goal – with one example being the events hosted by the U.S. National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) and led by the group’s vice president, Bill Sheridan, someone whom we have had the pleasure of working closely with over the years.
Upon my return, I found it quite apropos when I learned that the thought leadership and contributions Bill has made to the global relocation industry through the NFTC Expatriate and Assignment Management Committee were recognized when he was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Global Mobility Award from the Forum for Expatriate Management (FEM). Gone are the days when you can walk into a fast food restaurant and quickly choose between a hamburger and a cheeseburger and two sizes of fries; it can take 10 minutes just to run your eyes from one end of the overhead menu to the other. Likewise, if ever there was a time when companies shopped for “plain vanilla” relocation services, those times have surely changed as well.
This is certainly true for companies with large and complex relocation needs, but it is no less true for those clients and relocation managers who move only a few employees each year, or those who are new to the relocation management function. For many of them, relocation services may seem at first glance to be standard and similar in nature – in fact, basic commodities, with the only differences between them the price at which they are offered. But regardless of the size of their programs, many of these companies are rapidly evolving, and their need for more expansive services to support talent management is quickly evolving with them. That means looking at relocation services from a broader vantage point. In today’s business environment, there are a few key points to consider when thinking about relocation services. (more…)

The UK property price trends that we’ve seen in the last 12 months appear to be continuing with marginal price changes reported by major UK financial institutions, Halifax and Nationwide Building Society for the end of summer. According to the surveys, the average UK house price is now £161,743 to £165,914, representing a month on month decline of between 0.6% and 1.2%.
We discuss the state of the market in the September edition of the UK Property Market Watch. Other communications on the subject are available on the UK Property Market site.
Reports indicate that unrealistic asking prices are stalling many prospective sales with sellers valuing their properties at too high a price for the current market. A recent survey conducted by Cartus’ UK estate agency network, Home Sale Network found that 83% of survey respondents believe a property’s asking price remains key to achieving a successful sale. Indeed it is critical for sellers to set the correct asking price as soon as their property comes to market. (more…)

What a tribute! Last Thursday, it was my great pleasure to announce to a room packed with employees that Cartus Danbury has been voted one of the “TOP WORKPLACES” in Connecticut. I told the more than 1,100 Danbury employees who took the time to participate in the survey that their overwhelmingly positive responses won this honor for us, and I truly believe that.
Our selection was based on the responses of Cartus employees who participated in SouthernCTJobs.com’s “Top Workplaces 2011” survey. Of nearly 700 companies that were invited to take part, only 35 were selected. Cartus was one of 10 large companies chosen.
A special section on the awards was included in the Sept. 18 issues of local newspapers; check out the article that talks about some of the perks our employees enjoy. This YouTube video shows some of our employees’ reactions to the award!

Richard Smith, CEO of Realogy Corporation, the parent company of Cartus, was one of a select few industry experts who appeared before the Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation and Community Development of the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs on September 14 to discuss the state of the U.S. housing market and potential approaches to address the issues.
A transcript of Smith’s testimony is available through the committee’s Web site. Click on the image below to access the full video on the C-SPAN site. Smith’s testimony begins at approximately 17 minutes into the video. The press release issued by Realogy discussing his appearance can be found on Realogy.com.
